We endeavour to continuously improve our sustainability performance and promote responsible behaviour on campus to combat climate change. Every new building or renovations on campus will be designed and constructed in an environmentally friendly manner. The physical spaces created will not only be conducive to achieving excellence in teaching, learning and research, but also allow our students to steep in a green lifestyle that embraces energy saving, waste reduction and healthy living.
Green Building Award 2021 – Merit Award
Prioritising Pedestrian Access
The University is dedicated to prioritising pedestrian access on campus, ensuring that pedestrians have priority access to the roadways within the campus area. In line with this objective, all pedestrian routes within the campus will be carefully designed to provide clear and consistent access to building entrances. The campus also features footbridges and zebra crossings to ensure safe pathways for pedestrians. The convenient and easy access from public transport facilities, such as bus or minibus stops, are also considered when planning the routes to optimise the connectivity between the transportation hubs and the campus. Furthermore, for any new development projects, special attention will be given to prioritise and enhance pedestrian access and routing, emphasising the importance of encouraging this mode of travel.
Charging Facilities for Electric Vehicles
Electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities are provided on campus to promote Green Transport on campus. To reduce carbon emissions from transportation, newly built carpark will be equipped with EV charging provisions for every parking space, while for existing carparks, EV charging facilities will be increased and improved in the coming years. The University is also gradually replacing all its traditional gasoline-powered vehicles with electric vehicles.
Motorcycle and Bicycle Parking Facilities
Motorcycle and bicycle parking facilities are provided on campus to facilitate people opting for low-carbon commuting.
Public Transportation
Signage is provided on campus indicating the direction to the nearest Mass Transport Railway (MTR) stations to encourage sustainable commuting through public transportation.
Green spaces benefit our environment by lowering temperatures in urban areas and filtering pollutants and dust from the air. To increase the campus green spaces, we have planted and built green roofs, terraces and other green areas. Students, staff and the public can enjoy the green spaces for free during opening hours.

Green Catering Practices
Through programmes such as the Lunchbox Lending Programme and sustainability requirements in catering contracts, HKBU supports eco-friendly operations across all outlets.
Incentives for Sustainable Choices
Rebates are available at catering outlets for using reusable containers, cups, or requesting smaller rice portions, encouraging waste reduction and sustainable behaviour.
Food Waste Management
HKBU systematically collects and recycles food waste, this waste is collected and further recycled through waste-to-energy treatment. Designated bins in office pantries enable staff to participate in these efforts.
